Website down checker

The website down checker measures availability from our server, with DNS, connection, TLS and first byte timings per hop. Compare DNS answers and repeat after one minute.

Free, no account. Ten site checks per hour.

Our server resolves the name, opens a secure connection and loads the page once. Results can be cached for one minute.

A website down checker tests whether a site answers from a second place, so you can tell a site outage from a problem on your own connection. This one resolves DNS, opens TLS, requests the page and times each step from our server. The verdict covers one location at one moment.

How to use this checker

Enter the site
Use the address visitors open. We look up DNS, check the certificate on HTTPS sites and request the page as an ordinary browser, timing each step. A result is kept for one minute.
Read the verdict
Up means the page answered with a success status. Slow means the first byte took over 1.8 seconds, which web.dev rates as poor. Down means DNS, the connection or the server failed. Blocking means the server answered our check with a bot check or a refusal, so people may still reach it.
Remember where we test from
We test from one server at one moment. A site can be down for one network and up for another, and a short outage may already be over. Check again in a minute, and from your phone on mobile data.

Questions about this checker

Firewalls can drop requests from data centers, and DNS answers differ between networks. Some outages hit one region only. Treat our result as one more data point, and check your hosting provider’s status page.

The server answered, but with a bot check page or a refusal status such as 403 or 429. The site is probably online for people. Crawlers and uptime monitors may be refused too, which is worth a look in your firewall settings.

Read the step that failed. A DNS failure points to the domain or its nameservers, a certificate error to renewal, a timeout or refused connection to the server or host, and a 5xx status to the application. Your host’s status page and error logs come next.
