Question

How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT

ChatGPT names businesses from what it can read about them: directories, reviews, articles and their own pages. You cannot buy a mention, but you can change what it reads, and you can check what it says about you today.

The audit: $490 once, delivered within 5 working days or refunded, and credited in full against the first month of Complete AI Visibility, $990 a month.

To get your business recommended by ChatGPT, make sure the public sources it reads describe you clearly and consistently: your website, your Google Business Profile, the directories and review sites in your trade, and articles that mention you. There is no paid placement in the answer. The names change between runs, so measure across repeated questions rather than one answer.

In answers: the share of all the answers to this search that named the business. Under each assistant: the same share in that assistant’s answers alone. A dot means it never named the business. 55% of the names came back when the same assistant was asked the same question again.

How ChatGPT chooses which businesses to name

ChatGPT answers from two places: what the model learned in training and, when it searches the web, the pages it finds for the question. For a local or recent question it usually searches, so the businesses it names are the ones that the directories, review sites, maps and articles it finds agree on.

The answer is not fixed. Ask the same question twice and some of the names change, and different assistants agree on even fewer. One answer tells you little. A measurement across repeated questions tells you how often you are named, and who is named instead.

What you can change

Say what you do, where and for whom, in plain words on your own site, and mark it up with structured data. Keep your Google Business Profile complete. Make your name, address and phone number match on the directories and review sites in your trade and your country.

Earn mentions on pages that already answer your customers’ questions: local guides, trade associations, comparison articles and the press. Answer the questions customers ask on your own pages, with prices and specifics where you can. Ask happy customers for reviews where your customers read them.

How to check what ChatGPT says about you

Ask the questions your customers would ask, in their words, several times, and write down who is named. Do the same in more than one assistant. The free scan on this page does this for five questions and shows the names that came back.

Model API probes record what a configured model answers. They do not reproduce a customer’s own ChatGPT session, which can depend on memory, location and settings.

Our data

What our own measurements show about ChatGPT

Four findings from the AIGROW Index, the AI Source Map and our study of ChatGPT with and without web search, with the edition shown for each. These describe ChatGPT's answers across the studies. Use the free checker to see what it says about your business.

  1. With web search, it read reddit.com in 89.4% of its answers

Across 2,580 answers in the October 2026 AI Source Map, ChatGPT averaged 3.9 searches and 15.9 sites read per answer. After reddit.com came wikipedia.org (65.7% of answers) and trustpilot.com (12.2%).

  2. Without web search, it named a business in 93.9% of its answers about local trades

In the October 2026 Index, it named no business in 1,615 of 26,400 answers about trades in a city. It nearly always gave a name for software and consumer brands: 0.0% of software answers and 0.4% of brand answers named no business.

  3. When the question was repeated, 53.0% of the businesses it named appeared again

The September 2026 Index asked ChatGPT each question more than once. The remaining names changed between answers, so a single reply gives a partial view of what it says about a category.

  4. With web search, the business it named first was missing from its answers without search on 62.7% of pages

Our October 2026 study found this on 876 of 1,398 pages, each tested once with web search and up to 12 times without. On 667 of them, none of the businesses named with web search appeared in the answers without search.

Questions owners ask

Price, delivery, what is promised and what is not.

Make the sources it reads describe you clearly and consistently: your own site with structured data, your Google Business Profile, the directories and review sites in your trade, and articles that mention you. Then measure across repeated questions, because a single answer changes from run to run.

Usually because more of the sources it reads mention your competitor, or describe them more clearly for the question asked: more reviews, more directory listings, a page that answers exactly that question, or a mention in a local guide. The audit lists the sources cited in the answers where you were missing.

There is no way to buy a place in ChatGPT’s answer, and anyone selling a guaranteed mention cannot deliver it. What you can pay for is work on the sources the assistants read, and a measurement of the result.

It depends on how often the sources it reads are updated and searched. A corrected directory listing or a new page can reach answers that search the web within weeks; what the model learned in training changes only with a new model. That is why we measure every month against a baseline rather than promising a date.

No. The two overlap, because ChatGPT reads many of the pages Google ranks, but they are different systems. A business can rank well on Google and be missing from ChatGPT’s answers, and the other way round. The AIGROW Index finds that each assistant names different businesses for the same question.

Ask it the questions your customers would ask, in their words, a few times each, and in more than one assistant. Or run the free scan on this page, which puts five such questions to AI assistants and shows who gets named.

Yes. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity often name different businesses for the same question, so being named by one says little about the others. The audit measures four of them separately.
