Markup calculator

Use this markup calculator to solve cost or selling price from a markup or target margin. Convert either percentage and compare price sensitivity.

Selling price equals cost multiplied by one plus markup divided by 100. Solve cost from a known selling price, price from a target margin, or markup from cost and price. Margin divides profit by price; markup divides it by cost. A worked example explains the difference, with sensitivity results you can copy.

Your numbers

Currency changes formatting only. It does not convert amounts.

Enter amounts up to 1 trillion. Use your language’s decimal and grouping separators. Empty and invalid fields do not become zero.

Your result

Enter valid numbers to see the result. Costs and final values must be non-negative. Investment must be positive; annualisation needs a positive period; target margin must be below 100%. For break-even, price must exceed variable cost. Values that exceed the calculation limit need smaller inputs.

How to use this tool

Choose the direction
Choose price from cost and markup or target margin, cost from price and markup, or reverse markup from cost and price. Percentage-only modes convert margin and markup without requiring an amount.
Compare both percentages
Price = cost × (1 + markup / 100). Reverse markup = (price minus cost) / cost × 100. Gross margin = (price minus cost) / price × 100. They describe the same profit relative to different amounts.
Check the cost basis
Use amounts in the same currency for the same unit. Include the unit costs relevant to your decision. The price sensitivity table holds unit cost fixed. Currency switching changes formatting without converting the entered numbers.

Calculation method and assumptions

Questions before you start

Yes. A 100 percent markup doubles cost and gives a 50 percent gross margin. A 100 percent gross margin cannot be reached with a positive cost and a finite selling price.

Markup is undefined because its formula divides by cost. If price is positive, gross margin is 100 percent. The tool displays the undefined percentage explicitly.

Yes. A selling price below cost produces negative profit, markup and margin. A zero selling price leaves margin undefined.
