Profit margin calculator

Use this profit margin calculator for product pricing or accounting figures. Solve missing cost, price or profit and convert between margin and markup.

Free, no sign-up. Your entries stay in your browser.

Profit margin divides profit by revenue and multiplies by 100. Enter product cost and price, solve a missing amount, or supply revenue and accounting figures for gross, operating and net margins. Convert markup to margin and back, compare sensitivity scenarios and copy the inputs, formulas and results.

Your numbers

Currency changes formatting only. It does not convert amounts.

Enter amounts up to 1 trillion. Use your language’s decimal and grouping separators. Empty and invalid fields do not become zero.

Your result

Enter valid numbers to see the result. Costs and final values must be non-negative. Investment must be positive; annualisation needs a positive period; target margin must be below 100%. For break-even, price must exceed variable cost. Values that exceed the calculation limit need smaller inputs.

How to use this tool

Use comparable amounts
Choose product pricing or accounting margins. Product amounts must refer to the same unit. Accounting amounts must cover the same period. Blank optional figures are not estimated; operating expenses need a cost-of-goods figure.
Read margin and markup
Profit = price minus cost. Gross margin = profit / price × 100. Markup = profit / cost × 100. A zero price makes margin undefined and a zero cost makes markup undefined. Losses produce negative percentages.
Set a target margin
Price = cost / (1 minus margin / 100). Cost = price × (1 minus margin / 100). Revenue = profit / (margin / 100). A zero margin cannot identify revenue from profit alone. Recorded net profit supplies the net margin directly.

Calculation method and assumptions

Questions before you start

They use different denominators. Margin compares profit with revenue; markup compares it with cost. A 50 percent markup on a cost of 100 produces a price of 150 and a margin of about 33.33 percent.

Gross profit subtracts cost of goods sold from revenue. Operating profit also subtracts your operating expenses. Net margin uses the recorded net profit or loss you supply. Missing figures stay unavailable; no expenses are inferred.

No. Currency selection changes the label and formatting only. Enter both amounts in the selected currency. English pages start in US dollars and European language pages in euros.
