How to use this tool

What counts as a word
Unicode word boundaries come from Intl.Segmenter in your browser. Apostrophes and hyphenated words such as "well-known", grouped numbers such as 1,234.56, URLs and email addresses count once. Punctuation and lone symbols do not count as words. Chinese, Japanese and Thai use the browser dictionary; without it, the page labels a character-based approximation. Visible characters use Unicode grapheme boundaries.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time uses 238 words a minute for silent reading and 183 for reading aloud, the averages in Brysbaert's 2019 review of 190 reading studies. The same review lists how many words a text takes in other languages compared with English, and the rate is scaled with it for German, French, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Swedish. Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian and Polish use the English rate. You can change both rates.
Most used words
The list ignores case and function words from a list for each language. Density is occurrences divided by all counted words, including numbers, links and emails. Links and emails are hidden from the list. HTML tags, scripts and styles are removed before analysis. Large texts run in a worker after a short pause; pasting from Word or Google Docs removes hidden formatting artifacts.

Questions before you start

Your text is never uploaded or used for AI, and the text area is excluded from page analytics. These two counters share an autosaved draft in this browser only, restored after a reload. Clear removes it. Other people using the same browser can access the draft; private browsing or storage restrictions can prevent saving.

Word processors disagree on hyphens, apostrophes, numbers, URLs and scripts written without spaces. Here, apostrophes and hyphenated words stay together, numbers, URLs and emails count once, and punctuation splits words. The selected language supplies the Unicode word dictionary and the function word list. Without Intl.Segmenter, the page states that the fallback is approximate.

About 4 minutes reading silently at 238 words a minute, and about 5 and a half minutes reading aloud at 183. Technical text and unfamiliar subjects are slower. If you know your own pace, change the rates and the times update.

Yes. It counts English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian and Polish, with sentence rules and function words for each. Pick the language of your text above the box; if your text looks like another language, the page suggests switching.

Not on its own. Google's guidance on helpful content says it has no preferred word count. Write as much as the topic needs to answer the reader's question, and use the count to meet a brief or a platform limit.
