Occurrence density divides matches by all words. Share of words also counts the words in each phrase.
Keyword density is not a ranking factor or a target to hit. Use these counts to spot words you repeat too often, or a topic that barely appears. Unnatural keyword stuffing violates Google spam policies.
A keyword density checker shows repeated words and phrases. Import a public URL or paste text and HTML to count one, two and three word phrases in eleven languages. Check placement in the title, H1, headings, opening paragraph and meta description. HTML uses labelled main-content extraction. Google sets no target density; use these counts to review repetition.
How to use this tool
- How density is counted
- Density is the share of all words that a word or phrase takes up. A two word phrase used 5 times in a 500 word text covers 10 words, a density of 2%. French and Italian elisions such as "l'école" count as the word itself, and links and email addresses are left out.
- Phrases and function words
- Phrases are counted inside a sentence and listed when they appear at least twice. A phrase never starts or ends with a function word such as "the" or "und", so the lists show topics. Single words leave function words out too, and a switch puts them back.
- Headings and first paragraph
- Paste HTML and the tool reads h1 to h6 as headings; in plain text it reads Markdown lines starting with #. Title, H1 and meta placement use the page source, including H1 in excluded headers. Other heading and first-paragraph checks use the extracted content. Metadata is excluded from word counts. You can check up to 20 phrases of up to six words. HTML uses the first main element, then the first article, then the body, with navigation, headers, footers and sidebars removed. The result names that scope; this heuristic can omit useful content or retain cookie text.
