Glossary

Entity

An entity is an identifiable person, organization, place, product or other thing that an information system can distinguish from other things. Its name is one attribute, alongside facts such as an address or official website. Entity identification matters when several businesses share a name or one business is described under several names.

Why it matters for a business

A similar brand name can lead customers or assistants to the wrong company. Consistent public facts help readers distinguish your business. A website should make the official name, location and services clear instead of relying on the name alone.

Example and evidence

The AIGROW Index presents businesses within a category and location. That context matters: an identically named business in another city is not automatically the same entity. A name match in a published ranking still deserves checking against the business’s actual identity.

What to do next

Use a consistent official name, address and website across your main listings. Explain your service area and any branches. When adding Organization or LocalBusiness schema, describe the same facts shown to visitors and link only to profiles that belong to you.

Common question

No. A keyword is text someone searches for. An entity is the identifiable thing that text may refer to. Different phrases can describe the same business, and one phrase can refer to several unrelated businesses.
