Query fan-out
Query fan-out is a technique in which a search system issues several related searches across subtopics or data sources to develop an answer to an initial question. Google describes its use in AI Overviews and AI Mode. The supporting pages can therefore address parts of the user’s need without matching the original query word for word.
Why it matters for a business
A detailed buying question may combine location, service, constraints and comparisons. A page that answers one part well can be useful evidence. Repeating the broad query across many thin pages does not help a buyer assess those separate needs.
Example and evidence
An illustrative search for a family dentist with evening appointments may need information about location, services and opening times. These are distinct subquestions. The Index’s published buyer questions show question variety, but do not reveal Google’s internal fan-out searches.
What to do next
Identify the questions customers ask when narrowing their choice. Answer them with relevant service details and connect related pages through internal links. Use genuine subtopics, avoiding duplicate pages whose only difference is a keyword.
