AI Recommendation Rate

Of the answers AI assistants give to a customer’s question, the fraction that name your business. It is the number the AIGROW Index ranks by, the free scan reports and the audit measures.

Four of the twelve answers named no business at all. They still count, because a customer who got no name was not sent to anyone.

The AI Recommendation Rate is the fraction of AI assistant answers to a customer’s question that name a given business. Ask the same questions to the same assistants several times, count the answers that name the business once each, and divide by every answer received, including answers that name nobody. Twelve answers with three naming you is 25%.

The method

How it is measured

The questions are fixed

The questions are the ones a customer would ask when choosing a supplier, such as who the best dentist in a named town is, written in the customer’s own language. The same set is asked every time, so a change in the rate is a change in the answers and not in the questions.

Each one is asked more than once

An assistant does not give the same answer twice. Every question goes to every assistant several times, with no web search, no location and no chat history, so the answer comes from what the model already holds about the business.

Every answer counts once

An answer that names the business counts once, however many times the name appears in it. The rate is the answers that named the business divided by every answer received. A question that got no answer, such as a failed call, is left out rather than counted as zero.

Not to be confused

What it is not

The AI visibility score
The score from the free scan is out of 100 and adds four things: being named, being described, reach across questions and the machine-readable basics on the website. The AI Recommendation Rate is the first of them on its own, and is worth up to 45 of the 100 points.
Share of voice
Share of voice divides your mentions by everyone’s mentions, so it only compares the businesses that were named. The AI Recommendation Rate divides by the answers, so an answer that names no one lowers it, and it can be read on its own without a list of competitors.
A position in Google
A Google position is a place in a list of links that changes with every search. An assistant usually names a handful of businesses, or none, and the rate says how often you are among them, not where.
A citation
A citation is a link to a web page that an assistant gives as its source. A business can be named without a link to its own site, and its site can be cited without its name being recommended. The rate counts names.

The AIGROW Index

Every ranking in the Index is ordered by it, with a 95% interval, for each business in 2,398 rankings and 87,618 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok.

The free scan

The scan derives five questions from your website, asks up to four assistants and reports how many of the answers named you, before it adds the rest of the visibility score.

The audit

The audit measures it on 20 to 40 of your own questions across four assistants, per assistant and overall, and the monthly work is measured against that baseline.

Questions owners ask

It depends on the trade and the place. On some pages of the Index two businesses are named in more than nine answers out of ten; on others the business named most often appears in fewer than three out of ten. A rate means something next to the businesses asked the same questions, which is what the Index prints.

Assistants choose their words with some randomness, so one question can name different businesses on different runs. That is why each question is asked several times and why the Index prints a 95% interval: where the intervals of two businesses overlap, the gap between them could be chance.

No. In the Index the same question to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini often brought back different names, so the rate is reported per assistant as well as overall. Being named by one assistant says little about the others.

No one can promise a place in an assistant’s answer. What an owner controls is what is published about the business: the Google Business Profile, the directories and review sites, the structured data on the website and pages that answer customers’ questions. Complete AI Visibility does that work every month and measures the rate against the baseline.

Close, but stricter. A mention can be anywhere, including a warning or a comparison. The rate counts answers to a customer’s question that name the business as one to consider, because that is the answer that sends a customer.
