Share of voice in AI

Share of voice in AI is a brand’s proportion of mentions within a defined competitive sample of AI answers. One common calculation divides the brand’s mentions by all counted brand mentions. Tools use different denominators and counting rules, so the competitor set and whether repeated names count must be stated before comparing results.

Why it matters for a business

A changing competitor set can change the percentage even if your own appearances stay the same. Share of voice answers a relative question. Mention frequency answers how often your brand appeared, including answers that contained no business at all.

Example and evidence

The Index records the businesses named in answered tests. If an answer names several businesses, it contributes an answered test but several brand mentions. Share of voice based on mentions and recommendation rate based on tests therefore use different denominators, even when they start from the same answers.

What to do next

Write down the formula before tracking it. Freeze the questions, competitor list and counting rule, and show raw counts alongside the percentage. Report failed requests separately. Compare time periods only when the measurement conditions match.

Common question

No. Mentions in sampled answers do not measure purchases, customers or revenue. A high share of voice can coexist with few sales, especially when the questions do not reflect qualified buying intent.
