How AI assistants recommend roofers
Someone with a leaking roof who asks an AI assistant for a roofer gets a few names, and a different few from the next assistant. Here is what they answered in every city the AIGROW Index asked, and what a roofer can work on.
- Cities asked
- 88
- Names in the rankings
- 1,009
- Businesses named per city
- 27
- Names repeated on a rerun
- 38%
- Answers that name the leader
- 33%
The first two rows are counts; the rows under them are medians over the ranked pages. Every question was asked without a location or a chat history.
Asked for a roofer in 88 cities, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini named about 27 contractors per city, and 56% of those names came up only once. Each assistant builds its list from what is published about a contractor. What a roofer controls is that public record: the jobs, the area covered and the listings.
What a customer asked, and who came first
One place of the 88, as an example: New York. Every place was asked the same questions in its own language, and its page in the Index has the full ranking.
- Who is the best roofer in New York?
- My roof is leaking in New York. Which roofing company should I call?
- Which roofing contractor in New York would you recommend for a full roof replacement?
- Which roofer in New York can inspect my roof after a storm?
- Knickerbocker Roofing & Paving Co.named in 31% of the answers
- Skyward Roofingnamed in 28% of the answers

What an owner can work on
No one can promise a place in an assistant’s answer. What an owner controls is what is published about the business, and these are the parts the questions above point to.
Name the jobs you take
The questions ask about a leak, a full replacement and an inspection after a storm. A line for each, with your area, tells an assistant which questions you answer.
Show finished work
Photos of finished roofs with the place and the job, on your site and your profile, are evidence a customer and an assistant can both read.
Say if you come out after storms
If you do urgent repairs, state your hours and how to reach you in the same words on your site and every directory that lists you.
Every ranking for this trade
