How AI assistants recommend auto repair shops

A driver who asks an AI assistant for a mechanic often hears the names of national chains first. Here is what the assistants answered in every city the AIGROW Index asked, and what an independent garage can work on.

The first two rows are counts; the rows under them are medians over the ranked pages. Every question was asked without a location or a chat history.

Asked for an auto repair shop in 88 cities, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini named about 31 garages per city, and 54% of those names came up only once. Each assistant builds its list from what is published about a garage. What a garage controls is that public record: its repairs, its prices and its listings.

The questions ask about a check engine light and new brakes. A page or a line for each repair you do, with the makes you work on, matches the way drivers ask.

Show that you are fair

One question asked for a garage that is honest and fairly priced. Published prices for common jobs, and reviews that mention them, are the facts an assistant can repeat.

Stand apart from the chains

The same chains recur from city to city. An independent garage can state what it does that they do not, such as a make it specialises in.
