How AI assistants recommend restaurants
Someone who asks an AI assistant where to eat gets a list of restaurants, and a different list from the next assistant. Here is what they answered in every city the AIGROW Index asked, and what a restaurant can work on.
- Cities asked
- 88
- Names in the rankings
- 2,304
- Businesses named per city
- 43
- Names repeated on a rerun
- 62%
- Answers that name the leader
- 69%
The first two rows are counts; the rows under them are medians over the ranked pages. Every question was asked without a location or a chat history.
Asked for a restaurant in 88 cities, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini named about 43 restaurants per city, and 41% of those names came up only once. Each assistant builds its list from what is published about a restaurant. What a restaurant controls is that public record: its menu, its occasions and its listings.
What a customer asked, and who came first
One place of the 88, as an example: New York. Every place was asked the same questions in its own language, and its page in the Index has the full ranking.
- What is the best restaurant in New York?
- I'm looking for a restaurant in New York for a special dinner. Which would you recommend?
- Which restaurants in New York do the locals recommend?
- Where should I take a client for a business lunch in New York?
- Le Bernardinnamed in 78% of the answers
- The Modernnamed in 36% of the answers
- Katz's Delicatessennamed in 33% of the answers
The names that recur
88 different businesses came first across 88 rankings, and 8 names were listed in three places or more. These are the most frequent.
- The Capital Grille4 places
- A Casa do Porco3 places
- Balthazar3 places
- Dishoom3 places
- JAN3 places
- Rockpool Bar & Grill3 places
Counted by spelling: two businesses with the same name in different places count as one.
What an owner can work on
No one can promise a place in an assistant’s answer. What an owner controls is what is published about the business, and these are the parts the questions above point to.
Say what occasion you suit
The questions ask for a special dinner, for where locals eat and for a business lunch. Say which of these you are good for, in your own words, on your site and your profile.
A menu that can be read
A menu published as text, not only as a photo or a PDF, with prices and opening hours, tells an assistant what you serve and when.
Coverage beyond your own site
Restaurants are written about by guides, local press and food writers. A mention there describes you in someone else’s words, which is the kind of source an assistant repeats.
Every ranking for this trade
The AIGROW Index publishes the ranking of each place with every answer, and how it was measured.
