How AI assistants recommend gyms
Someone who asks an AI assistant for a gym usually hears the big chains first. Here is what the assistants answered in every city the AIGROW Index asked, and what an independent gym can work on.
- Cities asked
- 88
- Names in the rankings
- 749
- Businesses named per city
- 22
- Names repeated on a rerun
- 70%
- Answers that name the leader
- 94%
The first two rows are counts; the rows under them are medians over the ranked pages. Every question was asked without a location or a chat history.
Asked for a gym in 88 cities, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok named about 22 gyms per city, and 38% of those names came up only once. Each assistant builds its list from what is published about a gym. What a gym controls is that public record: its classes, the members it suits and its listings.
What a customer asked, and who came first
One place of the 88, as an example: New York. Every place was asked the same questions in its own language, and its page in the Index has the full ranking.
- What is the best gym in New York?
- I want to join a gym in New York. Which ones would you recommend?
- Which gym in New York is good for beginners?
- Where can I find a gym in New York with good group classes?
- Equinoxnamed in 81% of the answers
- Crunch Fitnessnamed in 73% of the answers
- Blink Fitnessnamed in 67% of the answers
The names that recur
48 different businesses came first across 88 rankings, and 85 names were listed in three places or more. These are the most frequent.
- Basic-Fit24 places
- Anytime Fitness23 places
- McFIT22 places
- Holmes Place16 places
- PureGym15 places
- F45 Training14 places
Counted by spelling: two businesses with the same name in different places count as one.
What an owner can work on
No one can promise a place in an assistant’s answer. What an owner controls is what is published about the business, and these are the parts the questions above point to.
Say who the gym is for
One question asked for a gym good for beginners. If you coach newcomers, say so on your site and in your profile, with what a first visit looks like.
Publish the class timetable
Another question asked for good group classes. A timetable on a page that can be read without an app, naming each class, is something an assistant can describe.
Stand apart from the chains
The same chains recur from city to city. An independent gym can state plainly what the chains do not offer: the coaching, the space, the hours.
Every ranking for this trade
The AIGROW Index publishes the ranking of each place with every answer, and how it was measured.
