How AI assistants recommend financial advisors
Someone who asks an AI assistant for a financial advisor often hears the names of banks first. Here is what the assistants answered in every city the AIGROW Index asked, and what an independent firm can work on.
- Cities asked
- 88
- Names in the rankings
- 892
- Businesses named per city
- 28
- Names repeated on a rerun
- 53%
- Answers that name the leader
- 47%
The first two rows are counts; the rows under them are medians over the ranked pages. Every question was asked without a location or a chat history.
Asked for a financial advisor in 88 cities, ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini named about 28 firms per city, and 47% of those names came up only once. Each assistant builds its list from what is published about a firm. What a firm controls is that public record: its services, its fees and its listings.
What a customer asked, and who came first
One place of the 88, as an example: New York. Every place was asked the same questions in its own language, and its page in the Index has the full ranking.
- Who is the best financial advisor in New York?
- I want help planning my retirement in New York. Which financial advisor would you recommend?
- Which fee-only financial advisor in New York would you recommend?
- Which wealth management firm in New York would you recommend for a family?
- Wealthspire Advisorsnamed in 53% of the answers
- Bessemer Trustnamed in 36% of the answers
- J.P. Morgan Private Banknamed in 31% of the answers

What an owner can work on
No one can promise a place in an assistant’s answer. What an owner controls is what is published about the business, and these are the parts the questions above point to.
Say how you are paid
One question asked for a fee-only advisor. State how you charge, in plain words, on your site and in every listing, so an assistant can answer that question about you.
One page per need
The questions ask about retirement planning and wealth management for a family. A page for each service, saying who it is for, answers each question as it is asked.
Registration that can be checked
Your registration with the financial regulator, listed the same way on your site and in the public register, is a fact an assistant can repeat and a client can verify.
Every ranking for this trade
The AIGROW Index publishes the ranking of each place with every answer, and how it was measured.
